My wife drove my car for the first time

September 23rd, 2004

Hey, this is big news, really! She was nervous about driving my new Elise, for she had seen how I was with my MR2. I kept reassuring her that the Elise was different, I wouldn’t be as bad as I was with the MR2 (this is true, though I expect I’ll degenerate back to the obsessive car owner profile in a few years). So, she opted for trying out the car in a parking. We found a nice, big one that was very empty and very safe, and I turned the keys over to her. I think she was a little surprised at just how easy the car was to drive, and she really seemed to like it (as evidenced by the huge grin on her face as she got a feel for its cornering abilities). Like me though, she noticed the large blind spots the Elise has and felt more comfortable letting me drive it home (how could I refuse…).

(up to 550 miles now…)

Observations after the first week with my Elise

September 22nd, 2004

I don’t mean to sound like I’m complaining. I just want to point out the issues that may surprise some people. Let’s face it, cars these days are so refined, there is much that people just come to expect in a car. The Elise is not designed with the same philosophy as, say, a Boxster, MR2, or NSX. The Elise has one priority, and that is to be a fantastic handling, incredible sports car experience. In that, it absolutely excels, and it is that that you must focus on when you buy your Elise. If you want a car that is not only the best sports car, but also has the best human factors and liveability, shop elsewhere (and spend the rest of your life regretting it! ).

Elise low fuel light operation

September 22nd, 2004

Today I discovered that the low fuel light comes on when there are approximately 2.4 gallons (out of 10.6) left in the tank. I’m not tracking mileage precisely yet, but it seems to be in the upper 20s. So, the Elise appears to have a pretty typical 40-50 mile reserve when the light illuminates.

I GOT MY CAR!!!!

September 10th, 2004

Wow, this actually happened. Until I signed the forms, I was still prepared to abandon what started as a dream and had become an obsession. There had been too much uncertainty, I didn’t know what to expect - did I really avoid the MSRP increase? Will the dealer honor the original agreement? Will any lame fees be added to the price? Etc etc. In the end, all’s well!
